The nonprofit has partnered with dozens of Fortune 500 companies. Common Impact connected Allstate employees with a Wisconsin domestic violence prevention group to improve staff parental and bereavement leave polices, for example. It also brought Blue Cross Blue Shield employees together with a Worcester, Massachusetts gang rehabilitation program that needed help collecting data to measure its success in grant applications. Allowing employees to select from a range of local community groups, and suggest their own, can help ensure everyone feels connected to their nonprofit partner’s mission.

Lower the barrier to entry by creating a variety of programs where newcomers can wet their feet and seasoned volunteers can go all-in. In a corporate world where employees are increasingly working hybrid schedules and spread out geographically, that means providing some remote service opportunities. Luckily, there are third-party organizations ready to partner companies looking for skills-based volunteering opportunities with nonprofits in need of extra help. The following advice from experts and nonprofit leaders provides some best practices for anyone interested in building or strengthening an officewide culture of service.

You would probably not to manually solder all of those components by hand. Maybe you've even gotten your hands on a few LEDs and started lighting stuff up, that's awesome! Let's talk about makin' it fancy outside of your standard LED. Don't go plugging any strange LEDs into your circuits, that's just not healthy. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning, adjusting connections, and inspecting wiring, ensures your LED display continues to look and perform its best. News from Dezeen Events Guide, a listings guide covering the leading design-related events taking place around the world.

Consider integrating these fixtures into ceiling designs, behind headboards, or even in light diffusing panels. Also, ensure that they are evenly spaced and properly diffused for a uniform light spread. They come in diverse colors, allowing more flexibility in design and mood creation. These installations are not only functional, but they also add an unexpected architectural element.

In this three part blog series we’ll be going through the steps you need to take to design your own LED light strip system. Check back next week for part two, and the week after for part three. In a CFL, an electric current flows between electrodes at each end of a tube containing gases. The UV light is transformed into visible light when it strikes a phosphor coating on the inside of the bulb.

The power light on your TV is probably about 100 mcd, whereas a good flashlight might be 20,000 mcd. Looking straight into anything brighter than a few thousand millicandela can be painful; don't try it. On the opposite end of the spectrum you can also get ultraviolet LEDs. Ultraviolet LEDs will make certain materials fluoresce, just like a blacklight! They're also used for disinfecting surfaces, because many bacteria are sensitive to UV radiation. They may also be used counterfeit detection (bills, credit cards, documents, etc), sun burns, the list goes on.

Designing efficient lighting for a home office desk area involves a degree of precision. Opt for LED desk lamps with adjustable brightness to accommodate different tasks during the day. Utilizing floating LED lights can transform a swimming pool into a magical, illuminated oasis at night. These lights come in a wide array of designs, from orbs and cubes to solar-powered variations. Easy to install, they don’t require any wiring or plugs, promoting safety around water. Despite their high intensity, they are energy-efficient, making them a sustainable choice for dedicated reading areas.

To prevent performance issues, the heat LEDs produce is absorbed into a heat sink. Their extensive range of colors and levels of brightness enable interior design customization. Despite being powerful, they’re energy-efficient, contributing to lower electricity bills. When choosing, consider color temperature, beam angle, and light output.

How to design a LED Light Strip System - A three part blog series [Part 1]

Besides the charge pump mentioned above (MAX1912), you can also implement a boost converter with current control. The MAX1848 switched-mode voltage converter, for instance, generates output voltages up to 13V—enough to drive as many as three LEDs in series (Figure 11). That approach is probably the cleanest, because all LEDs in series have exactly the same current.

The first "true blue" LEDs were developed several years ago using a pure silicon carbon material (SiC), but their light efficiency was poor. The next-generation devices had a gallium-nitride base material that achieved light efficiencies several times that of the first versions. Today's epitaxy material for blue LEDs is called Indium-Gallium-Nitride (InGaN).

Installation is typically simple with adhesive backing on most LED light strips. Choices in color and intensity offer versatility in personalizing the ambiance. It proves to be energy-efficient and a contemporary lighting solution. Illuminated skirting uses LED light strips installed along the bottom edges of walls. This design adds a subtle ambient light which outlines the room’s perimeters, enhancing its depth and dimension.

With their dreamy and whimsical glow, LED fairy lights can transform a bedroom canopy into an ethereal retreat. This could include intensive tasks such as paperwork and computer work, or relative relaxation when reading or sketching. Always consider the room’s size, ceiling height, and overall decor while choosing the size and placement of recessed LED lights. Apart from enhancing visibility, LEDs’ small size enables them to be conveniently tucked away without being intrusive, thereby keeping the focus on the items being displayed. Opt for dimmable solutions to adjust to preferences and requirements.

For single color strips, you’ll have choices ranging from around 100 to 800 lumens per foot (a traditional incandescent light bulb, for reference, puts out around 800 lumens). On the low end of that scale, the strips are ideal for accent lighting, and won’t put out quite enough to light up a room, for example (unless you use a lot of them!). On the higher end, you can use them to light up entire rooms, or for high intensity task lighting to work by. For many years the light emitting diode (LED) has been a popular choice for use in status displays and matrix panels. Now, you can choose among recently developed blue and white types (widely used in portable devices) as well as the ubiquitous green, red, and yellow types. White LEDs, for instance, are considered ideal background illumination for colored displays.

This LED has an maximum intensity of 200 mcd, which means it's just bright enough to get your attention but not quite flashlight bright. The first row tells us what the forward voltage drop across the LED will be. Forward voltage is a term that will come up a lot when working with LEDs. This number will help you decide how much voltage your circuit will need to supply to the LED.

There are elements of Art Deco (a movement that originated in France pre-WWI), including arched doorways, ceilings, and windows. In fact, arches are prevalent in modern European design, with cathedral ceilings, porte cochère courtyard doors, and similar touches. This dining room by Contreras makes use of traditional furniture elevated with modern decor and touches. Mixed metal decor can also be added through smaller accents such as photo frames, candle holders, or decorative trays. These items can be placed on coffee tables, shelves, or mantels to add visual interest and create a cohesive look. To create a cohesive and harmonious look, it’s crucial to balance warm colours with cooler shades, such as greens, blues, and greys.

In modern settings, those interior design elements are not followed strictly but rather used as inspiration. There is a focus on nature and the outdoors with large windows and doors, outdoor patios or decks, and lush gardens. The European decor style is a combination of classic and modern design, combining a variety of design influences from all over the continent. This style emphasizes the use of natural materials, earth tones, and textures.

What is the European Style in Interior Design?

Rich fabrics like velvet and silk are often used in upholstery to add texture and warmth, while colors are kept muted and neutral. Furniture pieces tend to be classic in design, with ornate carvings and dark wood finishes. Overall, the aim of the European style is to create an inviting atmosphere that exudes luxury and sophistication. In European interiors, we often see large windows that frame picturesque views of gardens, courtyards, or landscapes, allowing natural light to flood the space and creating a sense of biophilic design. Additionally, the use of natural materials like wood, stone, and rattan helps to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that evokes the feeling of being outdoors. Brooklynstudiomrs.comFollowing a career as a lawyer, Smith founded her design firm, Studio MRS, in 2011.

This style combines color, patterns, and clean tones to offer a kitchen that is functional, charming, and crisp. This style is great for just about anyone, as it offers two sides, the fun Bohemian and the functional sharpness of a modern kitchen. The use of minimalist and modern furniture is a great look for the average European kitchen. This room may be a smaller size but it highlights what can be done in a small location and offers a lot of personality. This room is great for those who want a clean and crisp style but don’t want to sacrifice color to get it. Europeans know better than anyone how to use floral patterns in a tasteful manner.

In our Winter 2023 issue, ELLE DECOR published principal Christina Seilern’s recently completed vacation home on the Greek isle of Paros. He’s currently working on a residence in Brentwood, California, as well as a home on Long Island. Large windows are always a must in healthy home design, and in modern European design, these gorgeous, spacious windows fit right in. Occasionally these steel windows will feature an arched transom and other architectural features that are eye-catching. The doors, again, may continue the arched theme and usually have a solid wood feel (with a great doorknob or beautiful vintage knocker). The roof is one of the most important components of modern European exterior design.

Contemporary European Interior Design

The European interior design style is one that has stood the test of time, with its elegant lines and sophisticated materials. Its classic look and feel make it timeless, and its versatility allows it to fit into any space. Tiling in the kitchen and bathroom areas is also a very popular feature in European interior design. Tiles come in a wide range of colors, patterns, and materials, and can be used to create both functional and decorative spaces. In tune with the nature-inspired hues used in modern European style, the materials also tend to be more natural, maintaining a balance between clean lines and more decorative details.

New York City/Nantucket, Mass.workshopapd.comSince founding Workshop/APD in 1999, Kotchen (left) and Berman have worked across architecture, interior design, and product design. Londonmiminat.comAfter founding her studio in 2018, the British Nigerian designer and artist has taken on ambitious work in locales from England to Nigeria to South Africa. Her elegant, pared-back aesthetic is all-encompassing, with Shodeinde often designing everything in a home down to the tables, chairs, and doorknobs. She’s currently working on projects soon to be completed in Kuwait City, London, and Ericeira, Portugal. So I know I may sound a bit biased (since modern European tends to be my design style of choice), but I really feel this style works for almost anyone.

Victorian Style Interior Designs

Our design experts explain below what their rules are for french chic 101. "French" is a broad term in the interior design world, but it boils down to regional influences. Ahead, you'll find tips on making your home feel like a corner of Provence or Parisian pied-à-terre. Valerie Darden, designer and owner of Brexton Cole Interiors, has a penchant for French interiors. If you are looking for house exterior inspirations from classic European style, check out my post here! I’ve also written an article on my takeaways attending one of the biggest garden show in London, at English Garden Inspirations from Chelsea Flower Show.

Defining elements and characteristics of traditional interior design

Her spaces feel both elegant and timeless, often with an eye toward refined vintage elements. Smith’s own home, a Greek Revival townhouse in New Orleans, graced one of two covers for our April 2023 issue. At the moment, she’s in the midst of completing residential projects in New York, Georgia, and New Hampshire. For the rest of the home, it's all about natural pieces that seem appropriate this century, last century, or beyond. One of the key elements of timeless design is to enter a room and not be able to pinpoint exactly when it was built.

Natural light is best, as it helps to create a connection to the outdoors. However, if natural light is not possible, you can use artificial lighting that mimics natural light, such as full-spectrum light bulbs. Chandeliers are a classic choice for European-style interiors, with their intricate details and elegant sparkle that can instantly transform the atmosphere of any room. The fabric can provide gentle cushioning against the wall, making it a comfortable place to rest while still being supportive.

The use of art and wall decor in an overzealous manner is a pinnacle of European interior design. This style offers a lot of different textures and colors, which combine together to artfully create a style that’s both bold and unique. When paired with Victorian or similar style furniture, you’ve got a classy yet expressive space. This is especially true if you want to create a European inspired kitchen. These metals can add a warm, inviting feel to the space, while also creating a luxurious, timeless atmosphere.

The use of golden accented furniture and fixtures combine perfectly with the oriental style of rugs. This room utilized big, classic furniture pieces to highlight a regal and royal vibe. While this European style may not be right for everyone, it’s always enjoyable and offers a touch of class to any room.

european interior design

By incorporating elements of European design into your own home, you can create spaces that not only reflect your personal style and sensibilities but also evoke a sense of rich history, culture, and sophistication. Raised in Paris and born into a multi-generational family of prominent architects and artists, a deep appreciation for design principles was instilled in me from an early age. I've always been fascinated by how color, light, form, and function entwine to define our environments and tell the story of who we are. My passion is creating refined interiors that exude comfort and kindle your joie de vivre while integrating those classic elements that bestow lasting integrity.

With a little bit of creativity and imagination, you can create a beautiful and unique space that reflects your own personal sense of style. The term “European interior design” covers a wide range of styles, from the classic and traditional to the contemporary and modern. Molly joined the Homes & Gardens interiors team at the start of 2024 as a content editor. Her undergraduate degree was in Magazine Journalism and Production, which she studied at the University of Gloucestershire. When decorating with modern European style, there are layers to the color palette.

Old-world Victorian-style homes often featured smaller, darker rooms and we all know dark, moody interiors are having quite a comeback lately. I am all about a good moody hue, but you'll want to offset the darkness with plenty of lighting. Many homes built in the modern European design style feature fireplaces—a functional hearth that also serves many purposes. A fireplace is a gathering spot, a focal point, a source of warmth, light, and even a place to cook. Now, most of us aren't cooking over fire in our modern homes, but the concept of a fireplace is timeless and constant. Terracotta is a warm and earthy colour that can add a touch of rustic charm to any space.

It can be used as an accent wall or with other warm colours, such as mustard yellow or burnt orange, to create a cosy and inviting atmosphere. Recycled plastic is another sustainable material gaining popularity in European interior design. It is an eco-friendly option because it reduces the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills. Recycled plastic can be used in a variety of ways, from furniture and rugs to decorative accents like vases and bowls. Sustainable materials such as bamboo, recycled plastic, and reclaimed wood are great options for those looking to incorporate eco-friendly elements into their homes. These materials are environmentally friendly and add a touch of natural beauty to any space.

Blair House Inn is a charming Texas Hill Country resort in Wimberley, known for gracious hospitality and a serene atmosphere, ideal for a Texas Wine Country getaway. Lansbury said Mendocino was chosen as the film location because of cost, stating it was too expensive to film in rural Maine. It is estimated the series brought in over two million dollars for the local economy, and generous donations were also made to various local service groups and organizations. Constructed in 1888 by Oliver Johnson, a prominent local builder and carpenter, the Blair House was owned by Elisha Blair, who arrived in Mendocino from Maine in 1957. After working as a mill hand at the Big River Mill for several years, Blair established himself as a financier in the town by lending money to other workers.
